The Rose Report

[Story No. 11] Harrison Opera House, Norfolk's Hidden Gem

The house lights go down, and the audience roars with applause -- signaling the show has begun. During a recent visit to the Harrison Opera House I had the opportunity to enjoy "Turandot" by Giocomo Puccini. This was an amazing afternoon filled with music, storytelling, and cultural immersion.

As the primary tenant of 160 West Virginia Beach Boulevard, the Virginia Opera has a 42 year history in Hampton Roads. Though based locally, the organization produces 28 mainstage performances each year across three venues in the Commonwealth from Northern Virginia to Richmond to Hampton Roads. These shows allow around 50,000 patrons each year to enjoy "The Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia".

Over the years the 1,632 seat facility has held different roles, whether a USO theater during WWII or more recently part of the SevenVenues network in the city of Norfolk. When you walk through the three story lobby for the first time, you'll immediately be hit with a sense of wonder. What is the opera like? Will I enjoy the music? Will I stay awake? The answer to all three, is a resounding, yes!

The main theater with its large balcony and private boxes along the side walls provide the perfect setting for an afternoon matinee, or the occasional Virginia Symphony Orchestra performance. While there are over 1,000 seats, you still feel very close to the stage and performers -- likely a combination of great acoustics and the 1993 renovation and redesign of the facility. Before you make your way to a show, you'll probably want to get something to eat first, so here are a couple local options.

NEARBY DINING OPTIONS

Omar's Carriage House

Byrd & Baldwin Bros. Steakhouse

The physical location of the Edythe C. and Stanley L. Harrison Opera House speaks to it's prominent place in Hampton Roads' cultural scene, right at the corner of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Llewellyn Avenue in downtown Norfolk.

So the next time you drive by the glimmering glass facade with those iconic corner towers, step inside and see what's playing.
